The United States of America
Speaking about the USA firstly I'd like to mention some facts about its geographical position. It is a big country spanning the North American continent and extending over large areas form the Atlantic ocean and into the Pacific. The continental part of the USA consists of 4 physical geographical parts: 2 Highland and 2 Lowland regions. The Highland regions are the Appalachian mountains in the east and the Cordielera in the west. The 5 Great Lakes between the US and Canada are Lake Superior, lake Michigan, lake Huron, lake Erie, lake Ontario.
The climate along the Pacific ocean is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast. In general the climate in North America is much colder than in Europe.
It is a must to mention some words about the flag of the USA, which is called "Stars and Stripes". The 13 stars on the flag represent the original 13 states, each of the 50 stars represent one of the states. There are 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii. The national emblem is "The Bald To my mind it's worth mentioning the fact that in the US the American flag is a very important symbol of the country and is supposed to be treated with respect. School children across the nation make the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag every weekday morning.
It's worth telling you that the American family is the basic unit of society, but it has undergone significant change in the last few decades - and it continues to change. The American family is very mobile. The usual way of life is very friendly. Both men and women usuallly smile and shake hands when greeting.
To my mind the political system of the USA is worth mentioning, too. The 2 leading national parties are the Democratic party and the Republican Party. The United States is such a large and diverse country that is difficult to label American parties as conservative or liberal. Every state and every city has its own police force. The FBI is the only nationwide police force.
As for the United States' history it would not be so interesting if it were not for the presidents. G. Washington was the 1st president of the USA. He wanted to create a b executive branch of the government that would cooperate with the Congress. Another remarkable presient in the American history is Abraham Lincoln. From 1861-1865, America was torn apart in a bloody conflict between Northern an Southern States largely over the issue of slavery. President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, defeated the Southern Confederacy and kept the Union intact. Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence, a principal leader in American Revolution and the 3rd president of the USA. The USA doubled its area in 1803 when he bought territory west of the Mississipy, called the Louisiana Purchase, which was the most important event in Jefferson's first administration.
